Surf and Turf Kenya

Experience the best of both worlds with the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. This eight day itinerary starts with the ultimate safari experience on a private conservancy home to the Big Five. You will then fly to your beach front accommodation that overlooks the warm, turquoise seas of the Indian Ocean. This trip is for a safari to Kenya but we can organise bush and beach holidays in other destinations. Contact us for more information.

Day 1

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our team and transferred to Wilson airport for your scheduled flight to Borana Conservancy, home to the inspiration for Disney’s ‘Lion King’. The flight is approximately 45 minutes long and if the skies are clear, you will enjoy a fabulous view of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya.

Day 2

Early mornings are the key – get out as the morning light touches the hills and you can experience the dawn of a beautiful day in the wilderness. Head out on a game drive and enjoy this private wilderness all to yourself. We always encourage our guests to get involved with daily conservation activities such as rhino tracking with the rangers or visiting one of the many farming or community projects which run in conjunction with the Conservancy.

Day 3

Visit the Ngare Ndare Forest and enjoy a bit of time out of the vehicle. Visit the ‘Blue Pools” and take a swim in the icy mountain water or opt for the canopy walk suspended at 30m above the ground. This suspension bridge runs for 400m through the forest at canopy level, allowing you to spot forest birds – Hartlub’s Turaco being one, Narina’s Trogan and Cask Hornbills. There is a large platform located at the end of the canopy walk where lunch will be served. Your lunch setting has a fantastic view of the river below where elephant and buffalo are often found having a swim themselves.

Day 4

Enjoy a morning horse-ride, a fantastic way to experience the wildlife on the conservancy. Borana is equipped with two sets of stables, each of which caters to riders of varying experience. Our larger stables cater to the more advanced rider, with thoroughbred horses leading rides for over two hours across the conservancy. Stables for the less advanced riders (small children included) are on the Eastern side of Borana Conservancy and run at a much slower pace. The grooms are very happy taking children for short rides on lead reigns which is a great way to build up their confidence.

Day 5

After breakfast, you will catch your flight to Lamu – either via Nairobi or directly if going by private charter to the lodge’s private airfield at Manda Bay. The small boutique lodge is located on the tip of an un-spoilt, idyllic island in Lamu’s archipelago where you kick off your shoes and enjoy simplistic beauty in palm thatched cottages and open living spaces.

Day 6

A day to enjoy the lodge and all it has to offer in the way of activities and relaxation. From fishing or water sports to spa treatments, walks and delicious cocktails and heavenly seafood — you will have plenty to see and do.

Day 7

A 20 minutes boat ride from Manda Bay is the historic town of Lamu, which is a must for any guest interested in culture and a little history. Lamu Town is the oldest continuously inhabited town in East Africa which has a mix of Swahili, Arabic and Portuguese cultures. Little has changed since the turn of the century and a guided tour is a fascinating way to spend a morning. There are many small shops where you can buy some locally crafted silver, wooden carvings and fabrics. The nearby village of Shella is an interesting place to visit and see some of the more modern buildings that have developed in the last 30 years.

Day 8

At high tide you can paddle board up the mangrove creek which is extremely peaceful and at low tide take the boat to visit our nearby conservation area of Manda Toto and snorkel amongst the many colorful fish along the fringes of the coral reef. End a relaxing day with cocktails on the waterfront whilst enjoying the sunset and a three-course meal served outside under the stars.

Day 9

Slowly wake up and languish with the warm sun on your face, the sand between your toes and enjoy your final morning at the beach. Relax by the swimming pool or read a book in one of our swing beds overlooking the sea. Following a sumptuous lunch, take a short flight back to Nairobi before connecting with your international flight home.
